Still hope for Markov?
August 27, 2007 by Matt
The Ottawa Citizen is reporting that Dany Markov is holding out for $2.5 million. Evidently the suitors are not lined up at this price. The Wings best offer of $1.5 million may be enough in the end, with Markov facing the alternative of a winter in Siberia.
Currently, the Wings defense corps is shaping up as:
Lidstrom, Rafalski, Kronwall, Chelios, Lebda, Lilja, Quincey
Obviously Quincey would be the odd man out in the event of Markov returning. Although Quincy proved during the playoffs that he can play effectively at the NHL level, Grand Rapids type minutes are probably best for his development at this point.
Odds are Quincey will be in Grand Rapids even without Markov returning, as Derek Meech must clear waivers to be sent down. The Wings probably wouldn’t want to risk that when they can just send Quincey down without going through waivers. Unless Quincey is flat-out stellar in camp and the pre-season, Meech will probably be the 7th D-man.
Good point.. funny how Quincey stands out in my mind as an established NHLer based on the playoffs alone. Pretty impressive for such a young defenseman.
